Ecocriticism, also known as environmental or green criticism, is a literary and cultural theory that emerged in the 1990s. In its broadest term, eco-criticism can be defined as an earth-centred approach to literary studies, seeking to (re)discover and (re)interpret literary texts in the light of recent ecological concerns. It urges us to reconsider the way that we represent, interact with, and construct the environment through cultural narratives. As such, eco-criticism can be seen as part of environmental movement aimed at raising awareness about growing ecological problems. This seminar is designed to provide an introduction to eco-criticism and its theoretical principles. After a brief survey of ecocriticism as a literary theory, selected literary texts shall be analysed from an ecocritical perspective to elucidate the ways in which ecocriticism may help us to examine our relationship with the environment.
